My name is Grant and I am a British Cycling Trained Coach with almost 30 years of experience, I was born into the sport and had an opportunity to race Professionally for several years. I offer and deliver coaching sessions to cyclists from those who are just starting out, this may be general commuter riding, cycling to keep fit or generally just building confidence on the bike to get the best out of your cycling. We also cater for cyclists that have specific targets for Competitive Events, and can coach for Team support and Management.

A free initial consultation is offered to determine that the structure works for each individual. All training plans are carefully created for each individuals needs. Training programs are tailored and sent each week, including weekly catch ups to adapt if and when required.

Through this platform I will be able to provide structured training plans based on your current fitness, we can then follow your progress if its just to get better on the bike, to building towards a cycling event.

Testimonials

Karen Whyte – The time I have spent with Grant being coached has allowed me to get into the best shape I have ever been in. He has a lot of experience with different training ideas to improve power, endurance and race knowledge. Grant has made a huge improvement in my cycling. His structured coaching has brought me results that were well beyond my expectations and have given me absolute confidence in his expertise.

Steve Buckley – I returned to road cycling after an absence of a couple of decades with the aim of matching the results and times I achieved when a young rider. I quickly learned that there has been a lot of change in the intervening years both in equipment and training techniques so I decided to get some guidance and I was very fortunate to be introduced to Grant Bayton of Via Roma Coaching. It has been a very successful collaboration where Grant has provided me with a structure for training and competing in time trials and road races. His experience as a professional rider provides an invaluable insight into all aspects of cycling which has kept me focused and motivated.I can recommend Grant’s help in achieving whatever cycling related goals you may have.

Caroline Trender – I first met Grant when I joined him on his Via Roma Cycling week in Tuscany. After a week of fabulous riding in Italy and some cycling tips and advice from Grant, I decided to try and qualify for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. As I’m a 50 something female hobby cyclist I was going to need a formal training plan and a cycle coach and this is where Grant stepped in to help me out. Although I live in France, Grant has supplied me with weekly training plans which are easy to follow, together with a weekly catch-up call to offer extra guidance and any necessary problem solving. I am amazed at the amount of progress I have managed to make. At the beginning of the year, without training I was a hobby cyclist. Seven months later, I have ridden in 2 UCI qualifying races and competed at the UCI World Championships. It has been an amazing experience and a huge learning curve. During this time my FTP has increased by 20%, I am now stronger and tougher than I ever was and more importantly I love my cycling even more. I cannot recommend Grant highly enough. He is a great listener, a fantastic coach and mentor. I could not have achieved any of this without his help and guidance.

Sue Fudge – The Best Holiday Ever
Cycling in Tuscany with Via Roma is just brilliant. There is no other word for it. The week we spent with Grant and Gary was challenging and on occasions really hard work, but it was also exciting, satisfying and the best fun I’ve had in years. In fact we enjoyed it so much that within a few hours of getting home we were already planning our next trip!
From the moment we arrived at Pisa airport, everything was taken care of and every aspect of our holiday went so smoothly that it was easy to forget how much work and organisation obviously went on behind the scenes.

I fall into the older, fatter, slower category of cyclist and I freely admit I’m rubbish on hills, so choosing a cycling holiday in Tuscany was a bit bonkers. Before we arrived, I did worry that everyone else would be much younger and faster than me and that I’d get dropped on every ride (I’ve been on cycling holidays like that and believe me they are no fun!). But I was soon reassured because we were with a lovely, friendly group of people who all encouraged each other. The rides were also supported so we didn’t have to worry about mechanicals or carting around loads of water bottles and clothing, the routes were well thought out so that they challenged everyone and there were Via Roma staff cycling with us to help with everything, including moral support.
The day we climbed 1,000 meters plus up Monte Serra was a highlight for me. I wasn’t sure I could do it and I won’t lie – it was difficult. But knowing there was a van on hand to rescue me if I got into real trouble gave me the impetus to keep going – as did the encouragement at various points with Grant shouting at me to ‘keep going and dig deep’. Reaching the top was fantastic and coming down again was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done, but I absolutely loved it and am so glad I had that experience.
Apart from the cycling, I also loved the accommodation, which was beautiful and rural and very typically Tuscan. The food was great, too. We ate at really good restaurants and all our evening meals were included in the price of the trip. On the last afternoon we went wine tasting and stocked up on some choice bottles, which were brought home in the van (along with our bikes).
I could go on and on about how much I loved this trip and how satisfying it was to achieve so much more than I thought I was capable of, but as a final thought there’s this: Since getting back, I’ve been cycling faster and have felt a lot stronger, especially on the climbs. I might has sworn a bit getting up some of those Tuscan hills, but they have definitely improved my riding. And the friends I made that week are going to be my friends for a very long time!

Elaine Quinn (Zurich Investment Services) Via Roma are experts in their field. We valued their professionalism, attention to detail, planning and organisation as well as all the health and safety aspects for the Race Across Europe. The team was extremely well led and managed by Grant Bayton, and the whole team were an absolute pleasure to work with.
I look forward to working with them again in the future and highly recommend them.
Thank again for EVERYTHING!

Lewis Braithwaite – From day one I have always found Grant to be very approachable and easy to talk to, i have been receiving coaching for around 2 years now and have gone from a complete novice who smoked to being a serious racer. Grant has always made sure the training I receive has been very personalised to fit around my work and family commitments and still get the best out of me at each event I attend. I couldn’t recommend Via Roma coaching enough 1st class coaching from a 1st class coach.
